Duluth, MN --- October 1st 2009      RAWH Home                  Prior Month

We've only just arrived and we've already found the water front boardwalk, the rose garden,  and the Willard Munger Bike trail.

So far, Duluth gets the nomination for "Most Seattle-like Town".

Minneapolis - St. Paul --- 1st week Oct. 2009

We turned the corner in Duluth and are heading south for the winter.  First stop: the twin cities.  Where's those hiking, biking, and kayaking shots you ask?

Nada.  Wind.  Rain. And wind-driven rain.  So we did what all good Minnesotans do during inclement weather: Go to the Mall!!

Cedar Rapids / Dyersville, Iowa --- 2nd Week Oct 2009

Well, fishing fans, good news.  If you're in Independence, Iowa at the crack of dawn looking for live bait before the stores open, you're in luck.  The True Value hardware store has a vending machine out front with your name on it.

My grandma's side of the family is from these parts.  The local attraction is the Basilica in Dyersville which my great grandpa had a hand in building.

5,000 parishioners still attend mass each week --- not easy to do in a town with a population of 4,000 people.

We are moving south for the winter and not doing an especially good job of catching good weather.  It was 26 degrees yesterday morning.  I took the liberty of filling out our October itinerary on the "index" page:  Atchison, Kansas City, Marshall, St. Louis, and Memphis.  If you have suggestions for stuff to see or do, please drop us a note.  Thanks!!

Des Moines, Iowa --- 2nd Week Oct. 2009

Here we are dodging the rain for a little stroll in Altoona...

Atchison, Kansas --- 3rd week Oct. 2009

Kansas City, Missouri --- 3rd week, October 2009

Two thumbs up to the Kansas City Art Museums.  Great museums.

St. Louis, MO --- 4th week October 2009

There is a lot to do in St. Louis:

the Arch monument and museum, the Forest Park museums and zoo, and the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.  Check out the sunshine.

Taum Sauk Mt. (highest point in Missouri)  Oct. 28th, 2009

We stopped at Taum Sauk on the way to Memphis.  I operated a QRP HF CW ham radio station from the "peak".

Memphis, TN --- October 31, 2009

Boo.  Bang!  It's time to knock down steel and poke holes in paper:  The 2009 Memphis Charity Challenge.

With 75 shooters, this was the largest revolver only match in the history of USPSA.  The overall winner was Jerry Miculek.  On stage 9, I scored one more point that Jerry.  He, uh, shot the stage in 1/3 the time I did.....  Compared to the world's fastest wheelgunner, I'm a little pokey.
